Opportunity
Writing in the modern world can feel lonely and challenging. As centuries-old storytelling industries continue to crumble beneath the rise of new technology and structural disinvestment in the literary arts and journalism, the ritual of writing has become increasingly difficult to sustain.
Inkling calls on traditions of communal care and creativity to nurture a new era of storytellers—bound not by age or genre, but by creative curiosity. We're doubling down on the power of human intelligence by exchanging skills and resources that sustain life-giving writing practices.

Team
Alyssa Smaldino (she/they)
Alyssa is a facilitator, organizer and editor. She is co-founder of Inkling Writers Collective and co-founder/editor-in-chief of Libertroph Magazine, which uplifts art and stories about white anti-racist organizing past and present. She is also an Undoing Racism trainer/organizer with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond and a facilitator of leadership courses with CUNY School of Social Work. Across all of their work and organizing, Alyssa is devoted to undoing racism and fostering cultures of care, where everyone is safe to express themselves as they are.
Matthew R. Manning (he/him)
Matthew is an essayist and memoirist living in Los Angeles. As a Swedish immigrant learning English in elementary school, Matthew found a home in words. He sees language as a form of alchemy—an opportunity to open the world to deeper empathy, inquiry, and humanity. He publishes personal essays on Medium and Substack, has worked as a freelance copywriter for over 10 years, and is transitioning out of Gumbo Media, the brand agency he founded, which served the storytelling needs of 200+ brands across industries since 2018. As a writer/editor, brand strategist and community builder, Matthew is now focused on building up Inkling, the imaginative literary space he has always wanted and needed. He is excited by the opportunity to fill increasingly urgent gaps in community, accountability and craft, easing the path for a new generation of storytellers.
